The Rukiga District Speaker Oscar Akampurira has today tasked the Rukiga district Sectoral Committee of Education to explain to the Council why the district failed to facilitate two primary schools that qualified for National Level in the Music Dance and Drama (MDD) Competitions.

During the council session at Rukiga district Rukiiko hall today, Akampurira said that it’s unfortunate that last Month, during the Regional MDD competitions that was held in Kanungu district, Rukiga Primary school and Kicucwe primary school all from Kashambya sub county became the second and the third respectively but never represented the district at National level. He therefore tasked the chairperson of the committee and the District Education officer to give a report on accountability of the Co-curricular activity funds.

The Committee Chairperson Ronah Tweheyo Rwebandira and the Rukiga district Education Officer Vastina Beyendera said that out of the 30 million shillings which the district council passed in the last financial year to cater for all the Co-curricular activities, 17 million shillings was allocated to cater for MDD and from zonal level to regional level, and they were left with only 892,500 shillings which couldn’t cater for the national competitions. Beyendera said that they are recommending that the balance be used to buy gift to the two schools that qualified for nationals.

However, the Muhanga Town Council LC5 Councilor Godfrey Mukuru said that the Education committee had in the sectoral committee recommended that since MDD requires a huge budget, they abolish it and the money be used in other scouting which require few participants, but his counterpart of Kamwezi Sub County Elly Akampumuza opposed the recommendation saying that it will have killed the talents of the learners skilled in MDD.

The District Speaker Oscar Akampurira said that the Education department should always communicate early in case of limited resources, so as they can be able to lobby funds from well-wishers to cater for such activities, because what happened demoralizes the talented learners.
