Residents of Kichumbi Parish are Struggling with Hunger Crisis after being Hit by Severe Floods Last Week.
Residents of Nyamabare, Rujanja, and Rushongati villages in Kicumbi Parish, Kabale District, are concerned about facing a hunger crisis after being hit by severe floods last week.
During a visit by Counsel Eliab Naturinda Mporera, aspiring MP for Ndorwa West, the residents expressed their fears. Dismus Turyatunga, a resident of Rujanja cell in Kicumbi Parish, Kamuganguzi Sub-county, told our reporter yesterday that the heavy rains caused floods that washed away their household items and livestock, including rabbits, goats, and sheep.
Provia Twebaze, another resident, voiced her worries about hunger due to the floods destroying their crops, such as Irish potatoes and beans. She called on the government to provide them with new seedlings to replant.
Deogrecious Guzire, vice chairperson of Nyamabare cell, said the situation is dire, as some residents lost their homes, toilets, and gardens. He added that among the affected are widows and the elderly who cannot easily recover from the disaster.
Bibyomumisho Zeferina, whose banana plantations and stored sorghum and beans were destroyed, expressed gratitude to Eliab Naturinda Mporera for his visit, which has given the affected residents renewed hope.
During the visit, Mporera advised farmers to adopt better farming techniques and seek guidance from agricultural experts to improve their yields. He also encouraged the use of organic manure to enhance crop production.
Mporera further urged residents of Kicumbi and surrounding hilly areas to consult Sub-county and district physical planners before building houses, to avoid constructing in flood-prone areas.
