Reckless Lifestyle Among the Population Continues to Cause Non-Communicable Diseases in Kigezi Sub-region.
The increasing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the Kigezi sub-region has been attributed to a reckless lifestyle among the populace.
Dr. Sacred Mukamarinanye, an NCD specialist at Diocese of Kigezi’s Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality, identified hypertension, diabetes, cancer, as well as cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, as the most common NCDs affecting the local population.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter today, Dr. Mukamarinanye noted that the silent killer conditions account for a significant proportion of hospital admissions and deaths, revealing that Rugarama Hospital alone recorded 63 new diabetic and hypertension patients in July, 69 in August, and 86 in September – indicating a concerning upward trend.
The medic decried the fact that many residents have adopted unhealthy diets (particularly processed sugars and carbonated drinks), tobacco smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption – which continually weaken their immunity and expose their body systems to disease risks. She called for collaboration among all stakeholders and proactive measures such regular health check-ups, avoiding alcohol intake, mass sensitization and awareness campaigns about the burden, embracing a balanced diet meal, and regular physical exercising, to manage the alarming statistic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that 33% of total deaths in Uganda are due to NCDs, while they kill an estimated 41 million people each year globally – 77% of them being in low-and-middle-income countries.
