Kabale University Research Shows Layers Poultry More Profitable Than Broilers in Kigezi Region
Researchers from Kabale University have discovered that layers breed of poultry birds generates more profits to farmers with a percentage of 20% whereas broilers has the least percentage of 5%.
The discovery was presented by the Head of Department of Social Work at Kabale University Mr. AdebayoTajudeen Sanni during the second parallel session of Economics, Accounting and Business Management today at a one day Multidisciplinary Research Dissemination Workshop focused on enhancing research utilization through Multidisciplinary research dissemination at Kabale University in Kabale Municipality. It was carried out in the six districts of Kigezi region that is Kisoro, Rukungiri, Kanungu, Kabale, Rubanda and Rukiga specifically about poultry production and employment generation among the Youths and Women in Kigezi region, Uganda. They found out that overall poultry production in Kigezi region is not profitable but most profits found among the layers breed of 20% and worst among the broilers of 5% after profitability assessment by deducting total costs from total revenue.
According to Sanni’s findings based on technical efficiency of poultry production as observed during the research process varies across all the poultry types and the main challenges faced which affect poultry production are market issues at 81% and diseases at 63%.
Sanni further stated that they decided to carry out this research following Uganda bureau of statistics report of 2016 which indicated a rise in the levels of unemployment among the Youths and Women in Kigezi region which was at 25.7% while focusing on poultry production activities as an avenue for availing employment opportunities to the Youths and Women in the region.
