Kabale District Authorities Forms a Partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment as a Strategy of Restoration of Catchment Areas.
In a bid to address climate-related disasters such as soil erosion and excessive flooding in Nyombe wetland in Kahungye subcounty, Kabale district Authorities in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment have launched the restoration of the catchment areas in the villages of Kinisa, Nyombe, and Bugoto in Kahungye subcounty Kabale district.
The launch which was held at the Nyombe wetland catchment Area in Kinisa cell Nyombe parish in Kahungye subcounty, focuses on implementing measures to protect, conserve and restore the Nyombe wetland ecosystem with funding from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) project.
During the launch the officials handed over equipment such as hoes, spades, shovels and seedlings to people around Nyombe wetland aimed at kick starting restoration activities such as digging check dams, gallies and planting indigenous tree species around the wetland.
The Kabale district Natural Resources officer Henry Tumwesigye said that residents have been sensitised about the ecological importance of wetlands and have resolved to voluntarily vacate the wetland, in order to occupy the catchment areas in the hills. Tumwesigye added that they are planting bamboo trees in the buffer zones which are environmental friendly and cover up trenches that help retain water in the wetlands.
