Kanungu District Local Government registered Ugx 5.14 Billion shillings extra of their Ugx 49.5 Billion budget for the Financial Year 2023-24.

Kanungu District has held a council meeting chaired by District Speaker Mr. Frank Farah Byaruhanga, focused on evaluating development within the district in relation to the district vision “A transformed district with an educated population, a clean environment, good health, and sustainable livelihood projects at every household by 2040. “

The meeting happened yesterday at the District headquarters. During his Council address Ambrose Mwesigye, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kanungu, said the situation in the district is calm, apart from the incidents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which have led to an increased influx of refugees into Kanungu, particularly in Matanda.

He informed the Council about several key issues including Monkeypox in Neighboring Country He emphasized the need to alert and sensitize the community at every opportunity and during public gatherings, Outbreak of Clostridial Infection, saying that There is an outbreak in the Greater Kambuga region affecting cattle, and the infection is also impacting humans who consume the meat of the infected cows. The veterinary team is actively addressing the issue, High Court Sessions, The RDC mentioned that high court sessions from Rukungiri will soon be projected in Kanungu to ease transportation and manage the increasing number of cases.
The RDC also noted a concern on SACCO Fund Mismanagement, by explaining that,There is concern about the extortion of funds by SACCO chairpersons, Power Extension, Power will be extended to Mpungu to serve the Mpungu Factory, Presidential Pledge, Follow-up on the Kayonza Tea Factory pledge from the President is ongoing, And Patriotism Training as Over 6,000 young people have been trained in patriotism.

Eng. Sam Kajojo, the District Chairperson, also delivered a state of the district address. Before beginning, he requested a moment of silence in honor of Hon. Sarah Mateke, the Minister who had been providing Kanungu District with 200 scholarship slots each year at the Uganda Management Institute (UMI).

He announced the names of the new land board members whose terms had expired: John Tindiwegi, former Head Teacher, Rehema Tindiwegi Biryomumaisho, former Deputy Speaker, Sunday Charles, former District Education Officer (DEO) Kanungu, Kenneth Mwesigye, former Sub-County Chief. Plus Service Commission Members who included; Sr. Magooba to extend her service, Fred Babigamba, representing people with disabilities, Hajj Kanyesigye Silagi Baguma, representing urban authorities and former Assistant Commissioner at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Emily Katirikawe, from Kirima and Managing Director at Uganda Health Management, Kajungu Obadia, former Head Teacher, as the Chairperson of the Service Commission

A report on revenue performance for the 2023-24 Financial Year was also given which indicated that, Local revenue: UGX 1,624,995,000 (budgeted), but UGX 850,926,000 received (52%), Discretionary Government transfers: UGX 5,404,826,000 (budgeted), but UGX 7,979,244,000 received (148%), Conditional Government transfers: UGX 39,435,194,000 (budgeted), but UGX 44,715,703,000 received (113%), Other Government transfers: UGX 2,938,154,000 (budgeted), but UGX 1,017,012 received (35%), External financing: UGX 100,000,000 (budgeted), but UGX 85,445,000 received (85%), Total Revenue UGX 49,503,169,000 budgeted, but UGX 54,648,329,000 received (110%).

The Revenue Performance report also indicated the implemented projects in various departments of the district which included;
Administration where a Feasibility and design for the administration block: UGX 50,000,000, First phase of administration block construction: UGX 82,582,000, Procurement of two laptops: UGX 8,000,000, Capacity building for staff and leaders: UGX 14,000,000, Renovation of the District Speaker’s office: UGX 30,000,000.

Health where a Completion of the OPD at Rutenga Health Center III: UGX 92,125,000, Remodeling and rehabilitation of Mpungu Health Center III staff houses: UGX 88,710,000, Katete General Ward: UGX 73,145,600 Renovation of District Medical Office: UGX 43,642,000.

Education where a Construction of a Library/ICT center at Burema Secondary School: UGX 100,000,000, Completion of classrooms at Kihiihi Primary School: UGX 200,000,000, Construction of a three-classroom block with a latrine at Kashenyi Primary School in Mpungu: UGX 200,000,000, Completion of the examination hall and renovation of four classrooms at Bujengwe Primary School in Kayonza: UGX 200,000,000, Construction of two classrooms with an office at Nyarurambi Parents Primary School in Kayonza: UGX 100,000,000, Contribution to the construction of two classrooms with an office at Nyarurambi Primary School: UGX 15,581,000, Construction of classrooms at Nyarurambi Primary School in Katete Sub-County: UGX 100,000,000, Construction at Kiringa Primary School in Kambuga Sub-County: UGX 102,006,000, Dormitory construction at Kihiihi Muslim Secondary School: UGX 45,545,000, Renovation of three classrooms at Bushoro Primary School and two classrooms at Nyamigoye Primary School: UGX 28,000,000, Renovation of two classrooms at Rushoroza Primary School, two at Bushoro, and four at Nyakashure Primary School: UGX 50,305,996, Construction of five stance lined pit latrines for boys at Rukarara Primary School: UGX 29,846,920, Five stance pit latrine for boys at Rutugunda Primary School: UGX 29,846,880, Renovation of two classroom blocks at Kinaba Primary School: UGX 61,354,100 and Installation of a lightning arrestor at Makiro Primary School and construction of a two-stance lined pit latrine at Namunye.
