The Member of Parliament for Kabale Municipality Hon. Dr. Nicholas Thadeus Kamara, has expressed his gratitude to the public, especially the residents of Kabale Municipality, for their prayers and support during they gave him during his time in police custody.

Dr. Kamara made these remarks today, August 11, 2024, while addressing the congregation at the baptism ceremony and thanksgiving service of Mr. and Mrs. Levic Mucunguzi Kagooro at St. James Kijuguta Church of Uganda in the Denary of St. Peter’s Cathedral Rugarama, Diocese of Kigezi.

He recounted the events leading to his arrest, explaining that the FDC members were petitioning the Kenyan High Commission in Uganda, demanding explanations and the immediate release of their colleagues who had been detained by Ugandan authorities. Him and his colleagues were detained while seeking answers regarding the arrest of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) members.

Hon. Kamara revealed that 36 FDC members from the Katonga faction were arrested in Kisumu, Kenya, by Ugandan external security operatives while they were on their way to a meeting. According to FDC, 33 of these members are currently held at Kitalya Prison, while three are detained at Luzira Maximum Prison.

Dr. Nicholas informed the public that in Parliament, they are advocating for the rights of prisoners detained in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries. He further said that, The acting president of the FDC Katonga faction, Erias Lukwago, disclosed that region governors in Kisumu and elsewhere denied any knowledge of the kidnappings and abductions of Ugandans in Kenya.

The FDC leadership believes this incident sets a dangerous precedent, reminiscent of historical abductions in the region. They demand that the Kenyan government take immediate action to resolve the situation.
On the same day, Dr. Nicholas also mentioned that this week has been challenging for him. On Wednesday, he was in Parliament discussing the government’s failure to deploy medical interns. He stated that despite the government’s claims of financial constraints, President Yoweri Museveni had previously declared that scientists are crucial for Uganda’s development.

On Monday this week, Joseph Socrates Odong, a graduate of medicine and surgery from Makerere University and a pre-intern, mentioned that despite efforts to deploy 1,263 interns, 1,207 remain undeployed. He emphasized that they have petitioned the Speaker of Parliament and President Yoweri Museveni to urgently address the issue.

Regarding the electricity problems in Kabale District, Hon. Kamara expressed his desire to participate in a demonstration that was scheduled for August 9, 2024, to protest the poor electricity service in the district. Unfortunately, the organizers of the demonstration were arrested.

The individuals who were detained include Job Namanya Apuuli, a journalist with Vision Group; Obed Kankiriho, a journalist affiliated with The Source UG Website and Daily Monitor; and social media influencers Murungi Charlotte Kemigisha, known as Kemmy, and Precious Tumuranze. They were apprehended at Café Barista, a popular hangout in Kabale town.

The arrests were led by Andrew Akanyijuka, the Officer in Charge of Kabale Police Station, who stormed the café with several officers and presented an arrest warrant citing charges of inciting violence. The group was then swiftly taken to Kabale Police Station, where they are currently being detained.

Dr. Kamara noted that the government has repeatedly promised improvements to the electricity supply in Kabale, but the residents are now fed up with UMEME due to the frequent power outages.
